Preparing to take the IELTS exam can be a daunting task. The study advice below will help you reach your desired IELTS band score.
1.Know the exam
Before you begin studying for the IELTS exam, do some research on the test format. Though questions will vary from test-to-test, the basic structure of the exam and types of questions asked will be the same no matter when or where you take the test. Familiarizing yourself with this information will help you organize your studying and avoid any unpleasant surprises on test day.
The first step is to determine whether you will need to take the IELTS Academic or General Training test. Not only will the Reading and Writing portions of the test vary based on which of these two options you pick, but you will also have to specify which exam you will be taking when you register to take the test, so do your research well before you begin studying for the exam.
Next you should spend some time looking over the four portions of the exam: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The IELTS website will tell you all that you need to know about the exam. Remember, the section format stays the same from one exam to another, so it is a good idea to refer back to this information periodically as you prepare for exam day.
2.Study using sample exam questions
Whether you study from an IELTS guidebook or find sample questions online, the best way to prepare for the exam is to complete as many sample exam questions as possible. Not only is this another way to become familiar with the exam format and style, it will help you study at the level required to achieve a band score of 9 on the exam.
Oxford University Press’ IELTS Masterclass book is a great resource for those preparing for the Academic test. A quick google search will also leave you with many sample questions. The IELTS Essentials website offers practice tests and questions for both the Academic and Reading tests.
3.Take a full practice test before exam day
Find a full practice exam and set aside some time to sit and take it. Make sure you do it in a quiet place and at a time when you won’t be interrupted. Complete all four sections in order, using the exact time alloted by IELTS for each section, and have a friend help you by reading the Speaking questions out loud.
It is a good idea to do this as early as possible as this experience will allow you to have an idea of what your band score might be and give you clues as to which sections you should spend more time studying.
4.Continue working on your language skills
As important as it is to study and prepare with the IELTS exam in mind, you won’t get the band score you’re aiming for unless your language is at the right level. Put the IELTS study guides and practice questions away every once in awhile and sit down with an English book or magazine, put on an English movie, or have a conversation in English with a friend.
5.Relax, be confident!
Get a good night’s sleep the night before the exam. Make sure you have all the necessary paperwork and documentation ready to bring with you to the exam and read up on IELTS test day protocols. No matter how well you think you know the exam, listen to and read instructions carefully. Take a deep breath before you begin your Speaking exam and don’t forget to smile. Show the examiner that you are comfortable speaking in English and your fluency will come through!
