20 สำนวนภาษาอังกฤษที่ฝรั่งชอบใช้ในชีวิตประจำวัน

 

เป็นที่รู้กันว่าภาษาไทยเรานั้นมีสำนวนไทยต่างๆมากมายที่เราเคยได้ยินจนคุ้นหูบ้าง  เช่นเดียวกัน ภาษาอังกฤษก็มีสำนวนต่างๆทีใช้กันในชีวิตประจำวัน  บางสำนวนก็มีความหมายตรงกันกับภาษาไทย ต่อไปนี้เป็นสำนวนและวลีภาษาอังกฤษทั่วไป  15 สำนวนที่จะช่วยเพิ่มคำศัพท์ภาษาอังกฤษของคุณและเป็นวิธีเรียนภาษาอังกฤษอีกแบบที่ทำให้คุณพูดเหมือนเจ้าของภาษาได้ภายในพริบตา

 

1. The best of both worlds – หมายความว่าคุณสามารถเพลิดเพลินกับสองสิ่งที่แตกต่างได้ในเวลาเดียวกัน
   “By working part-time and looking after her kids two days a week she managed to get the best of both worlds.”

 

2. Speak of the devil –หมายความว่าคนที่คุณเพิ่งพูดถึงปรากฏตัวขึ้นในขณะนั้น
   “Hi Tom, speak of the devil, I was just telling Sara about your new car.”

 

3. See eye to eye – หมายถึงการตกลงกับใครบางคนได้
   “They finally saw eye to eye on the business deal.”

 

4. ‘Once in a blue moon’– an event that happens infrequently.
   “I only go to the cinema once in a blue moon.”

 

5. When pigs fly –บางสิ่งบางอย่างที่จะไม่เกิดขึ้น
   “When pigs fly she’ll tidy up her room.”

 

6. To cost an arm and a leg – บางสิ่งบางอย่างที่มีราคาแพงมาก
   “Fuel these days costs and arm and a leg.”

 

7. A piece of cake – บางสิ่งบางอย่างที่เป็นเรื่องง่ายมาก
   “The English test was a piece of cake.”

 

8. Let the cat out of the bag– บังเอิญเปิดเผยความลับ
   “I let the cat out of the bag about their wedding plans.”

 

9. To feel under the weather– รู้สึกไม่ค่อยดี
   “I’m really feeling under the weather today; I have a terrible cold.”

 

10. To kill two birds with one stone– แก้ปัญหาสองอย่างในครั้งเดียว
    “By taking my dad on holiday, I killed two birds with one stone. I got to go away but also spend time with him.”

 

11. To cut corners– ทำงานได้ไม่ดีหรือทำแบบชุ่ยๆ
    “They really cut corners when they built this bathroom; the shower is leaking.”

 

12. To add insult to injury– ทำให้สถานการณ์แย่ลง
    “To add insult to injury the car drove off without stopping after knocking me off my bike.”

 

13. You can’t judge a book by its cover– เราไม่สามารถตัดสินคนจากภายนอก
    “I thought this no-brand bread would be horrible; turns out you can’t judge a book by its cover.”

 

14. Break a leg –หมายถึง โชคดี (มักพูดกับนักแสดงก่อนที่จะขึ้นไปแสดงบนเวที)
    “Break a leg Sam, I’m sure your performance will be great.”

 

15. To hit the nail on the head –เพื่ออธิบายถึงสิ่งที่เป็นสาเหตุของสถานการณ์หรือปัญหา
    “He hit the nail on the head when he said this company needs more HR support.”

 

16. Play it by ear – หมายความว่าแทนที่จะยึดติดกับแผนที่กำหนดไว้กลับเปลี่ยนแผนไปตามสถานการณ์
    “What time shall we go shopping?”  “Let’s see how the weather looks and play it by ear.”

 

17. Raining cats and dogs – ชาวอังกฤษชอบใช้กับสภาพอากาศโดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งเวลาที่ฝนตกหนักมาก
    “Listen to that rain!” “It’s raining cats and dogs!”

 

18. Can’t do something to save my life – ใช้ออกตัวว่าคุณไม่คุ้นเคยหรือเก่งในเรื่องนั้นๆ  โดยปกติจะใช้ในลักษณะปฏิเสธที่จะรับงาน
    “Don’t pick me – I can’t draw to save my life.”

 

19. Turn a blind eye – หมายถึงการแกล้งทำเป็นไม่ได้สังเกตเห็น
    “She took one of the cookies, but I turned a blind eye.”

 

20. Fat chance – อ้างถึงบางสิ่งบางอย่างที่ไม่น่าเชื่อ  แปลกและตรงกันข้ามกับสิ่งที่คาดหวังไว้
    “We might win the Lottery.” “Fat chance.”
